Garfield Township
Northern Tip of Lake Michigan
Garfield Township, located in the western part of Mackinac County along the Lake Michigan shoreline, is a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty. The township's southern border is defined by the scenic shores of Lake Michigan, and it is home to three distinct communities: Engadine, Naubinway, and the smaller Gilchrist.
Historically, Garfield Township has thrived on its abundant natural resources, with commercial fishing, lumbering, and agriculture being the backbone of its early economy. Notably, lumber harvested from this area played a significant role in rebuilding Chicago after the great fire of the 1800s. Approximately 25 square miles of the township's 137 square-mile area dedicated to farming. This represents around 55% of Mackinac County's agricultural land. Although recent years have proven hard on farming and made it increasingly tough on farmers to exist economically, many residents of Garfield Township still till the soil each year and put food on area tables.
While the economy was once dominated by fishing, lumber, and agriculture, the township has seen a shift in recent decades toward recreation and tourism. This transition has enhanced the area’s economic vitality, with attractions like the Hiawatha Sportsman's Club (HSC) playing a central role. The HSC owns 35,000 acres of land and has over 1,200 members, significantly influencing the local community and economy.
Garfield Township is renowned for its recreational offerings, making it one of the top destinations in Michigan for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the Big Knob State Forest Campground, which is located directly on the Lake Michigan shore, offering scenic campsites and access to one of Michigan's few Karst areas, where an underground river cuts through limestone. The area is also rich in inland lakes and streams, such as Millecoquin's Lake and River, which flow into Lake Michigan and are abundant with fish, providing excellent opportunities for anglers.
In addition to fishing, the township is a haven for hunters, offering a wealth of deer, small game, and migratory bird hunting opportunities. Snowmobilers and cross-country skiers also enjoy the well-maintained trails that crisscross the township, providing easy access to local businesses and scenic spots. The US-2 roadside park east of Naubinway offers a modern, beautiful beachside picnic area, enhancing the township’s appeal to tourists.
While many areas struggle to preserve green spaces, Garfield Township is blessed with a predominantly natural landscape, offering a refreshing retreat for nature lovers. Whether it’s for outdoor recreation, agriculture, or its rich history, Garfield Township continues to be a charming and vibrant community along Michigan's shores.
